Zerodha co-founder Nithin Kamath has credited affordable mobile data, Aadhaar, and UPI for driving his company's growth and India's wider capital-markets boom. Reflecting on a 2015 list of businessmen to watch published by The Economic Times, Kamath noted that Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani topped the ranking at number one, while Kamath placed sixth after Zerodha made delivery brokerage free.

The Digital Shift

Kamath stated on X that Zerodha and many other online-first businesses would be much smaller without the digital foundation built by telecom operators and government infrastructure. This digital access allowed companies to reach customers online much more easily.

Internet access alone was not enough for financial services to expand. Customers also needed simple ways to verify their identity and move money digitally. Kamath highlighted that Aadhaar provided the digital identity infrastructure while UPI offered the payment network needed to make onboarding and investing smooth and convenient.

## Context

These combined systems helped unique investors in India grow from about 2 crore in 2016 to over 13 crore during the post-pandemic period. Kamath pointed out that many business success stories rely heavily on foundational systems built by entirely different industries.
