Regular gym workouts improve strength, but back pain remains a common issue for many people. When back pain strikes, figuring out whether a few days of rest will fix it or if a doctor is needed can be a challenge. Pathologist Dr Shelly Mahajan shares how to tell the difference.
Muscle Soreness vs Injury
Common muscle fatigue feels like a dull and spread-out ache across the lower back. This type of ache fades within two to three days with light movement, decent hydration, and downtime. A genuine injury feels quite different with sudden and sharp pain. A subtle popping sensation when lifting or pain that gets worse when bending forward points to a more serious strain.
Warning Signs
Ignoring gym pain and hoping it goes away only makes a minor problem worse over time. Discomfort, numbness, or a tingling feeling moving down the glutes or legs points to pressure on a spinal nerve. Leg weakness when trying to raise a foot while walking is another key warning sign. Pain that lasts past a week, gets more intense instead of fading, or causes sleepless nights needs professional care rather than mere rest. Any abrupt loss of control over bowel movements or urination means a person must rush to the hospital immediately. Doctors use tests like X-Rays and MRIs to get an accurate picture and plan the right treatment.
Context
Pathologists study diseases and examine body tissues to help doctors diagnose various medical conditions. Medical experts often remind gym-goers to pay close attention to bodily signals during weightlifting and high-intensity exercises to prevent long-term spinal issues.
