Indian equities slipped for the second consecutive session on October 21, 2026, as benchmarks failed to hold early gains. The Nifty closed down 77.60 points at 22,811.35, while the Sensex dropped 143.21 points to settle at 73,709.69.
Market Movement
Selling pressure hit autos, metals, and financials, dragging indices lower despite early strength in IT stocks. Market breadth remained weak with more than 360 stocks touching fresh 52-week lows. India VIX rose nearly 7% to 15.79, showing higher investor anxiety. IT was the lone bright spot, gaining over 2.5% led by Infosys, Tech Mahindra, TCS, and HCL Tech. Auto, consumer durables, energy, media, metals, pharma, realty, and private banks all fell between 1% and 2%. Broader indices also fell, with Nifty Midcap down 1.58% and Smallcap down 2.37% for their fourth straight decline.
Technical Outlook
Market expert Raja Venkatraman, co-founder of NeoTrader, shared stock picks and technical levels for traders. He recommends buying CASTROLIND above 198 rupees with a stop loss at 188 rupees and a target of 211 rupees. For COCHINSHIP, he suggests selling below 1175 rupees with a stop loss at 1225 rupees and a target of 1075 rupees. On the charts, Nifty formed a bearish candle below its 20-day exponential moving average. Immediate support rests around 22,630 to 22,650, while resistance is seen near 22,960 to 22,980. Open Interest data shows the Max Pain point shifted to 22,900.
Context
Stock market indices track the overall value and daily price movement of a basket of major listed companies. Broad sell-offs often happen when negative global events or geopolitical tensions make investors pull money out of riskier assets like equities. Technical indicators like moving averages and volatility indexes help traders gauge market momentum and the strength of price trends.
