Indian stock market indices are heading for a negative start on Thursday, October 22, 2026, as GIFT Nifty signals a muted opening. Gift Nifty traded around the 22,682 level, down by 46.50 points or 0.20% from the previous Nifty futures close.

Market Decline

Equity benchmark indices fell for a second straight session on Wednesday. The BSE Sensex declined 143.21 points, or 0.19%, to close at 73,709.69, after touching an intraday high of 74,682.19 and a low of 73,229.45. The NSE Nifty 50 shed 77.60 points, or 0.34%, to settle at 22,811.35. Selling pressure hit power, banking, and financial stocks, while elevated crude oil prices, rising US bond yields, and foreign institutional investor outflows added to the market decline. Ajit Mishra of Religare Broking noted that profit booking erased early gains supported by IT stocks and Reliance Industries. Sachin Gupta of Choice Equity Broking stated that Sensex support sits near 73,500, while Osho Krishan of Angel One highlighted that Nifty needs to stay above the 22,720 zone.

Global Cues

Wall Street tech stocks rallied for a third straight day on Wednesday, supported by a rise in SpaceX shares and gains in the Dow Jones, S&P 500, and Nasdaq, though US futures faced pressure in extended trading after earnings from Meta, Tesla, and IBM. In Asia, South Korean stocks opened lower with the Kospi dropping 65.55 points to 5,670.11 due to concerns over AI infrastructure profits. Japan's Nikkei 225 recovered to trade 0.22% higher, with Kioxia up 1.52% and SoftBank down 0.15%, while Taiwan's Taiex index rose 0.61% to 47,175.33.

Context

Stock markets often fluctuate based on a mix of domestic selling pressures and international cues from Wall Street and Asian trading floors. Key technical levels like support zones help traders track short-term stability when indices face profit booking.
