Child actor Taruni Sachdev left a lasting impression despite appearing in only four films before her life ended in a 2012 plane crash. Born on May 14, 1998, she balanced her studies at a Mumbai school with a busy career in advertisements and cinema. Before her tragic passing, she acted in over fifty commercials, earning widespread fame as the 'Rasna girl' after sharing the screen with Karisma Kapoor. Her other brand work included spots for Colgate, Saffola, and ICICI Bank.

Film Career

Taruni made her acting debut in Malayalam cinema with director Vinayan's horror-comedy 'Vellinakshatram', playing opposite Prithviraj Sukumaran. Her natural delivery and intense performance in the film quickly won over audiences, and she teamed up with Prithviraj again the same year in the action movie 'Sathyam'. Five years later, she appeared as Auro's classmate in R Balki's acclaimed Bollywood drama 'Paa', starring alongside Amitabh Bachchan. Her final screen appearance came in the Tamil film 'Vetri Selvan', which released posthumously.

The Tragic Crash

On her fourteenth birthday, May 14, 2012, Taruni and her mother boarded an Agni Air flight heading to Jomsom in Nepal. The Dornier aircraft crashed into a hillside while attempting to land, killing fifteen of the twenty-one people on board, including thirteen Indian passengers. Before embarking on the journey, Taruni reportedly said emotional goodbyes to her classmates, hugging them and sending a final text message to her best friend asking what would happen if the plane went down.

Context

Child artistes in the Indian film industry often transition from high-profile television commercials into feature films at a very young age. Aviation accidents in mountainous regions like Nepal's rugged terrain present severe navigational challenges for commercial flights due to unpredictable weather and difficult landing approaches.
