Indian equities snapped a two-week winning streak this week as surging crude oil prices and inflation worries overshadowed strong corporate earnings. Brent crude traded at $110 a barrel on Friday, adding to pressure on corporate costs and margins. The Sensex fell 2.15% during the week to close at 73,123.83 on Friday, while the Nifty 50 declined 2.36% to 22,600.00.
Market Impact
The sell-off hit smaller companies the hardest, with the Nifty Smallcap 250 index tumbling 7.1% for its steepest weekly drop since February 2025. The Nifty Midcap 150 fell 5.3% and the Nifty 100 dropped 2.8%. All sectoral indices finished lower, led by a 7.5% decline in BSE Capital Goods, while power, utilities, realty, and consumer goods stocks also suffered steep losses.
Expert Insights
Devender Singhal, senior fund manager at Kotak Mahindra AMC, pointed to global selling in artificial intelligence stocks and high price-to-earnings multiples as factors driving the weakness. Anand K Rathi, co-founder of Mira Money, noted that smallcaps achieved revenue growth at the expense of profit margins, leaving them more vulnerable to high interest rates.
Earnings Growth
Despite the market decline, corporate earnings showed strong results. An analysis of 267 BSE-listed companies revealed that second-quarter revenue rose 18.1% year-on-year, while profit jumped 25.9%, marking the fastest growth for both measures in at least five quarters.
Context
Stock markets often react negatively to high crude oil prices because India imports the majority of its oil requirements, which increases costs for businesses and fuels overall inflation. Higher borrowing costs also tend to reduce the present value that investors assign to future corporate earnings, putting pressure on expensive stock valuations.
