UPDATE - follow-up to Andhra braces for very severe cyclonic storm; Odisha activates disaster mitigation machinery | LIVE: The Regional Meteorological Centre has issued heavy to very heavy rain warnings for isolated places across Tamil Nadu. Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, Pudukkottai, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Tiruchirappalli, Karur, Cuddalore, Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Sivaganga and Karaikal districts are expected to see such rainfall on Sunday. Red alerts have been declared for Theni, Dindigul and Madurai districts where extremely heavy rainfall is likely. Additional districts including Tiruvallur, Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Villupuram, Kallakurichi, Vellore, Ranipet, Tirupattur, Tiruvannamalai, Namakkal, Salem, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Erode, Virudhunagar, Kanyakumari and Puducherry are also slated for heavy rain. Tamil Nadu authorities have placed red alerts over southern interior districts and warned that the system could deepen into a cyclonic storm by Monday. In Odisha, five districts will remain closed on Oct 28‑29 and fishermen have been advised to stay ashore. The cyclone is projected to hit Andhra Pradesh’s coast between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam on Oct 28 with sustained winds up to 130 km per hour, surpassing last year’s Montha. The IMD notes that a very severe cyclonic storm carries sustained winds between 118 km/h and 221 km/h. ## Context The forecast highlights how the same low‑pressure system affecting the east coast is bringing severe rain to Tamil Nadu while also threatening Andhra Pradesh, illustrating the wide‑area impact of Bay of Bengal cyclones.
