UPDATE - follow-up to Cyclone over Bay of Bengal to bring heavy rain across South India, Odisha, West Bengal; red alerts issued in multiple States | LIVE: The deep depression over the Bay of Bengal is moving southwestwards and will intensify into a very severe cyclonic storm before crossing the coast between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam by the forenoon of October 28, 2026. The India Meteorological Department states the system will bring maximum sustained wind speeds of 115 to 125 kmph, gusting up to 140 kmph.

Rainfall and Warnings

Extremely heavy rainfall is expected over Coastal Andhra Pradesh on October 27 and 28, Odisha and Telangana on October 28, and Chhattisgarh on October 28 and 29. Meanwhile, parts of West Bengal will receive heavy rain from October 28 to 30, with squally winds starting along the coast from October 27. Fishermen are strictly warned not to venture into the sea.

Government Action

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has reviewed cyclone preparedness, directing officials to shift residents from low-lying areas, stop fishermen from going out to sea, and set up toll-free emergency numbers. In Tamil Nadu and Kerala, heavy rains have already led to tourist bans at hill locations like Yercaud and Jawadhu Hills, alongside road repair work at a landslip site on the Mettupalayam-Coonoor ghat section.

Context

Tropical cyclones in the Bay of Bengal typically form during the post-monsoon season, drawing energy from warm ocean waters to produce destructive winds and torrential rains upon landfall. Disaster management authorities rely on advance tracking by meteorological agencies to evacuate vulnerable coastal populations and deploy emergency relief teams before the storm hits.
