Bengaluru is set to receive light to moderate rain or thundershowers, which may turn heavy at times, over the next 24 hours. The India Meteorological Department announced this on Sunday as a depression over the Bay of Bengal gathers strength.

Rainfall Forecast

Rainfall will hit parts of South Interior Karnataka, including Bengaluru Urban and Bengaluru Rural districts, from October 26 to October 31. Light to moderate rain is expected at a few places in these areas, along with Chamarajanagar. Meanwhile, dry weather will likely prevail in Ballari, Chitradurga, Davanagere, Chikkaballapura, Mandya, and Vijayanagara districts. The city sky will remain mostly cloudy, with the maximum and minimum temperatures hovering near 27 degrees Celsius and 21 degrees Celsius.

Storm Movement

The weather system over the Bay of Bengal will intensify into a cyclonic storm by Monday morning. It will grow into a severe cyclonic storm by Tuesday morning and move northwest toward the coast. By Wednesday morning, it will reach the west-central Bay of Bengal near the Andhra Pradesh coast as a very severe cyclonic storm. It is expected to cross the Andhra Pradesh and Yanam coasts between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam by Wednesday forenoon, bringing dangerous wind speeds of 115 to 125 kilometres per hour.

Context

Depressions forming over the Bay of Bengal during this time of year often bring heavy rains to the southern and eastern parts of India. Coastal areas face high risks from strong winds and rough seas when these systems intensify into severe storms. Meteorological departments track these weather patterns closely to issue timely warnings to cities and coastal districts in the path of the storm.
