Odisha authorities started active safety preparations on Sunday by sending teams and rescue tools to at-risk places ahead of a major storm headed for the nearby Andhra Pradesh coast on October 28. The India Meteorological Department reported that a weather system over the Bay of Bengal strengthened into a deep depression after moving southwest over the previous six hours. Forecasters expect the storm to cross land between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam with steady wind speeds up to 125 kilometres per hour and powerful gusts reaching 140 kilometres per hour. Weather officials noted that a low-pressure zone over the central and southeast Bay of Bengal first grew stronger on Saturday morning. The system stayed in that area and turned into a depression on October 24 before moving west-northwest to become a deep depression the next day. The disturbance is projected to grow into a full cyclonic storm over the west-central Bay of Bengal by the morning of October 26 and march toward the Andhra Pradesh shore by October 28. Manorama Mohanty, the director of the meteorological centre in Bhubaneswar, stated that Odisha will face heavy rain and strong winds as the storm moves closer.
Context
Bay of Bengal storms are common during this time of the year and often bring heavy rainfall and strong winds to India's eastern shoreline. Authorities regularly mobilize disaster response teams early to evacuate people from vulnerable coastal zones before such severe weather arrives.
