All educational institutions in the Palakkad district, including professional colleges, will stay closed on Monday, October 26, due to heavy rainfall. District Collector K. Sudheer made this announcement on Sunday.
Scope And Exemptions
The shutdown covers anganwadis, madrasas, tuition centres, coaching centres, and special classes. However, any examinations scheduled in advance will take place as planned. Previously scheduled fairs and festivals may also go ahead if organizers take adequate safety measures.
Warnings And Restrictions
The India Meteorological Department issued a red alert for the district on Monday. Because of this, authorities may restrict tourist travel to the hill regions of Nelliyampathy and Attappady. The district administration warned residents about potential risks, including waterlogging, traffic jams, poor visibility, and flooding in low-lying areas and near riverbanks. Officials also noted the threat of tree falls, power cuts, and damage to houses, along with possible landslides and soil slips.
Context
District administrations typically declare holidays for educational institutions during severe weather alerts to protect students and staff from transit risks. A red alert from the meteorological department signifies extremely heavy rainfall that can disrupt normal life and create hazardous outdoor conditions.
