UPDATE - follow-up to Monsoon tracker LIVE: Depression over Bay of Bengal to intensify into cyclonic storm by October 26:

Storm Path And Impact

An approaching deep depression over the Bay of Bengal is set to turn into a very severe cyclonic storm and cross the coast between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam by the morning of October 28. The system will hit the Andhra Pradesh and Yanam coasts with top wind speeds of 115 to 125 kilometres per hour, reaching gusts up to 140 kilometres per hour. Extremely heavy rain is expected in coastal Andhra Pradesh on October 27 and 28, along with heavy downpours in Odisha and Telangana on October 28, and in Chhattisgarh on October 28 and 29.

Official Preparations

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Naidu has ordered a high alert, keeping 10 National Disaster Response Force teams and 11 State Disaster Response Force teams ready for rescue and relief work. State Ministers have put power utilities on high alert with 25,000 poles kept on standby, while fisherfolk along the Kakinada coast have been told to stop fishing and return to shore. Meanwhile, heavy rains and related incidents have impacted other regions, including two worker deaths from a tree fall in Kerala's Idukki district and school closures ordered in Palakkad and Dindigul.

Context

Tropical cyclones frequently form in the Bay of Bengal during the post-monsoon months, bringing destructive winds and heavy rains to India's eastern coastline. State disaster management authorities routinely pre-position rescue teams and utility equipment in vulnerable districts to minimize loss of life and restore essential services quickly after landfall.
