UPDATE - follow-up to United States Grand Prix: Formula One – live: Kimi Antonelli secured his ninth win of the season in Austin after a dominant performance, though his championship celebrations must wait.

The Race Finish

The twenty-year-old Italian took pole position and crossed the finish line with a massive lead of around sixteen seconds. Charles Leclerc finished second, while Max Verstappen took third place after late battles on the track. Valtteri Bottas pulled off the track near the end, bringing out a virtual safety car before the race finished under normal racing conditions. Earlier in the race, Lance Stroll started from the pit lane after setup changes, Franco Colapinto and Oliver Bearman both retired, and Bearman also served a ten-second penalty before pulling out.

Championship Standings

Antonelli needed specific results behind him to clinch the world title today, but Lewis Hamilton finished fourth and George Russell finished eighth. Those results keep both drivers' faint championship hopes alive and push the title fight to the next grand prix. Hamilton fought his way up past Lando Norris and Isack Hadjar, even recording the fastest lap of the race before taking his final pit stop and reentering in sixth place.

Context

Formula One world championship points are awarded down through the top positions at every grand prix, meaning a leading driver must hold a mathematically uncatchable points gap over every rival to seal the title early. Races feature strategy calls like tyre changes and pit stops that can shuffle the order in the closing laps. When cars break down on track, race control deploys virtual safety cars to slow drivers down safely while marshals clear the vehicles.
