A seventeen-year-old boy was granted bail by the Juvenile Justice Board after a luxury car he drove crashed into a scooter, killing a fifty-five-year-old man in Kochi. The fatal crash took place around two-twenty in the morning near a vehicle dealership at Maraparambu on Container Road in Cheranalloor. The victim, Jayabalakrishnan from Chittur in Cheranalloor, died at the spot while returning home after closing his eatery.
Investigation Details
Police stated that a preliminary medical test showed the minor was not drunk at the time of the crash. According to the first information report, the teenager drove alone from Vallarpadam toward Kalamassery when his vehicle hit the scooter moving in the same direction. Authorities initially granted him station bail under Section eight of the Juvenile Justice Act and filed charges for rash driving and causing death by negligence. Following heavy public backlash, investigators added a stricter charge for culpable homicide not amounting to murder and took the boy from his home into custody before producing him before the board.
Public Reaction
Protesters demanding the arrest of the teen and action against his father, who is a judicial officer and owns the car, gathered outside the police station late Sunday night. The board granted bail mainly because the boy has no past criminal record. This incident marks the second fatal road crash involving a minor driver in Kochi within a fortnight, following an earlier collision near Nedumbassery that claimed three lives.
Context
Road safety concerns involving underage drivers have drawn sharp public attention in urban centers across the country. Legal provisions under juvenile justice laws generally treat minors differently from adults, focusing on reform rather than strict detention, which often triggers intense debates during high-profile accidents.
