Suzuki plans to cut vehicle weight by 100 kg by the year 2030 through a new lightweight engineering programme. The company shared these details at its Technology Strategy Briefing 2026. Beyond basic structures, the savings will come from vehicle architecture, powertrains, electrical systems, and individual parts. Additional ideas under study could push total weight savings up to 120 kg.

Engineering Changes

To keep safety high without adding heavy reinforcement, Suzuki is changing how crash energy moves through the car. The company is redesigning layout spaces, such as moving the engine forward to allow controlled deformation during a crash. High-tensile steel will also be used to build thinner sections that still keep their strength. Even tiny parts are part of the plan, like shrinking an M8 bolt head to save one gram. Since a car uses over 2,000 bolts, these small changes add up.

CNG Focus

For the Indian market, Suzuki aims to replace heavy steel CNG tanks weighing around 60 kg with new resin cylinders weighing about 20 kg, which cuts 40 kg off the total weight. The company is also studying a simpler mono-fuel system that runs only on CNG instead of the current petrol-and-CNG setup. Other updates in the wider powertrain roadmap include a new turbo-petrol engine, a 48V hybrid system, and plug-in range-extender options. Specific launch dates and model names remain unannounced.
