The updated Hyundai Ioniq 5 delivers a real-world driving range of 501 kilometres on a single charge, beating the Tesla Model Y by 130 kilometres in recent tests. The April 2026 update equipped the Hyundai EV with a larger 84kWh nickel manganese cobalt battery, replacing its older 72.6kWh unit. This change raises its kerb weight to 2,165 kilograms, which is 150 kilograms heavier than the outgoing version. In comparison, the Tesla Model Y packs a smaller 64kWh lithium ferrous phosphate battery and weighs 2,003 kilograms. Both vehicles use a rear-wheel-drive layout, but the Tesla produces 299 horsepower and 420 Newton-metres of torque. That gives the Model Y an advantage of 70 horsepower and 70 Newton-metres over the Hyundai, which outputs 229 horsepower and 350 Newton-metres. Testing conditions involved driving both cars on fixed loops with the air conditioning set to 22 degrees Celsius and using features like lights and ventilated seats normally. In city efficiency, the Ioniq 5 recorded 6.22 kilometres per kilowatt-hour while using Eco mode and Level 2 regenerative braking. The Model Y managed 5.84 kilometres per kilowatt-hour in the city using Chill mode and Standard braking. On the highway, the Tesla proved more efficient at 6.52 kilometres per kilowatt-hour due to its better aerodynamics, whereas the Hyundai managed 5.71 kilometres per kilowatt-hour. Overall tested average efficiency stood at 5.96 kilometres per kilowatt-hour for the Hyundai and 6.18 for the Tesla. As of September 2026, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 costs Rs 55.71 lakh, making it Rs 4.82 lakh more expensive than the Tesla Model Y priced at Rs 50.89 lakh.
