UPDATE - follow-up to At least 10 dead in crash between two trains in Spain's Toledo province: At least ten people were killed on Wednesday when a high‑speed train slammed into the rear of another on the Madrid‑Andalusia line near the towns of Mora and Orgaz in Toledo province. The collision knocked two cars off the tracks. Spain’s rail operator ADIF suspended service between Madrid, Ciudad Real and Andalusia after the accident. TVE reported that both trains were traveling in the same direction and that the rear‑end impact caused the derailment. Manuel Galán, mayor of Urda, said civil‑protection officials asked his town hall to ready a sports pavilion for injured passengers. Jesús Pérez, mayor of Los Yébenes, described the crash as serious. Castilla La Mancha regional president Emiliano García‑Page posted on X that he was on his way to the site. The incident follows a January crash in southern Spain that killed 45 people when a train left the track and hit an on‑coming train, the deadliest since a 2013 accident that claimed 80 lives. That earlier disaster had shaken public confidence in Spain’s extensive high‑speed rail network.

Context

Spain’s high‑speed network has grown rapidly in the past decade, linking major cities with frequent services. Past accidents have prompted safety reviews and tighter controls. The latest crash adds pressure on authorities to improve signalling and train‑spacing systems.
