Thirteen years after its initial theatrical release in 2013, the biographical drama film Shahid is finally available to watch on Prime Video. ## The Story And Awards Directed by Hansal Mehta, the movie is based on the real-life story of lawyer and human rights activist Shahid Azmi, who was assassinated in Mumbai in the year 2010. Actor Rajkummar Rao plays the main role, while Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, Prabhleen Sandhu and Baljinder Kaur appear in supporting roles. The film won major honours at the 61st National Film Awards, where Hansal Mehta received the award for Best Director and Rajkummar Rao shared the Best Award for Best Actor with Malayalam actor Suraj Venjaramoodu. ## Reactions And Questions Following its digital release, co-writer and editor Apurva Asrani posted a message on social media to question why it took thirteen years for the critically acclaimed movie to find a streaming home. Asrani noted that the film deals with a lawyer who defended people accused under terror laws, and pointed out that the project spent many years without digital availability following a political shift that began around 2014. ## Context Streaming platforms often acquire older library titles years after their theatrical runs, bringing niche or critically praised films to new digital audiences. Biographical films about real-life legal figures frequently spark wider public discussions about justice, civil liberties, and the challenges faced by independent filmmakers in the entertainment industry.
