Director Hansal Mehta's 2013 courtroom drama Shahid has finally released on an online streaming platform 13 years after its theatrical release. The film stars actor Rajkummar Rao as lawyer Shahid Azmi who defended people accused under terror laws after the 1992 Mumbai riots. Made on a budget of 35 lakh rupees, the movie premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2012 before a limited release in Indian cinemas the next year. Both Hansal and Rajkummar won National Awards for Best Director and Best Actor respectively.
Writer Questions Timing
Co-writer and editor Apurva Asrani posted on his social media handle to question why the film is only streaming now in 2026. He noted that Shahid Azmi fought for due process when Muslims were often presumed guilty before being proven innocent and was later murdered for his courage. Asrani pointed out that the movie released a year before 2014 and stated that a political climate followed where dissenters and activists faced suspicion. He mentioned the case of former student leader Umar Khalid who has been in jail since 2020 after the Delhi riots without his trial starting.
Industry Impact
Asrani also stated that this political climate affected the film industry because many creators struggled to make courageous stories or were co-opted into making politically conforming work. He praised the movie as a reminder of bold cinema and thanked Prime Video India where the film dropped on Tuesday. The movie was co-produced by Anurag Kashyap, Ronnie Screwvala, and Siddharth Roy Kapur, and featured actors Kay Kay Menon, Tigmanshu Dhulia, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, Shalini Vatsa, and Vipin Sharma. The project also started a long partnership between Hansal Mehta and Rajkummar Rao that led to films like CityLights, Aligarh, Omerta, and Chhalaang.
Context
Courtroom dramas and biographical films often highlight real-life legal struggles and civil liberties in India. Streaming platforms frequently acquire older critically acclaimed titles years after their theatrical runs to expand their digital catalogs.
