Russo Scores Historic Goal as Arsenal Dominate Benfica in Women's Champions League Clash

UPDATE - follow-up to Arsenal v Benfica: Women's Champions League – live: Arsenal took control of their Women's Champions League match against Benfica on a chilly night at Meadow Park as manager Renée Slegers made three changes to her starting lineup, bringing in Elisa De Almeida, Ona Batlle, and Geraldine Reuteler.

First Half Action

Benfica kicked off playing in white on a crisp evening, missing their injured Brazilian striker Nycole Raysla. Arsenal controlled much of the early play, with Olivia Smith firing a 20-yard shot saved by Benfica goalkeeper Lena Pauels, while Benfica's defense dealt with early pressure from crosses by Reuteler and long-range attempts from Smith and Georgia Stanway.

The Breakthrough

The deadlock broke when Caitlin Foord flicked a clever pass to Russo, who cracked a low shot into the far corner from 15 yards out. That strike marked her 21st goal in the Women's Champions League, equaling Fran Kirby's record for an English player.
