Kochi City Police Commissioner Kaliraj Mahesh Kumar has been removed from his post due to the strong displeasure of Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala following a car accident in Cheranallur. The accident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, involving a Mercedes car driven by a 17-year-old minor identified as a judge's son. By Sunday evening, the Cheranallur police station granted bail to the minor driver, which quickly triggered massive public protests led first by the CPI and later joined by other political parties. The children of Jayakrishnan, the person killed after being hit by the car, also reached the police station to protest while their father's funeral pyre was still burning. Local MLA T.J. Vinod intervened after receiving an unsatisfactory response from the city police commissioner. Vinod called the Home Minister directly to warn him that the situation was getting out of hand and could damage the government's image, especially coming within two weeks of another car accident in Nedumbassery. Following this, Chennithala questioned the district police leadership over granting station bail to the suspect and warned the Commissioner, stating 'I will take action against you' before cutting the call. Police subsequently added a culpable homicide charge, took the minor back into custody, and presented him before the Juvenile Justice Board. Chennithala then instructed the DGP to take action regarding the lapses by the city police commissioner, leading the DGP to direct ADGP P. Vijayan to visit Kochi. During these developments, CPI state secretary Binoy Viswam called Chennithala from outside the Cheranallur police station to report the worsening situation. The Home Minister informed Viswam about ADGP Vijayan's upcoming visit and even spoke directly over the phone with Bhadrakeerthi, the daughter of the victim, which finally led to the protest ending that night. ADGP Vijayan arrived in Kochi, held a two-and-a-half-hour meeting at the Cheranallur station, and spent an hour and a half at the victim's home. By four o'clock in the evening, an announcement was made suspending four police officers including the SHO, culminating in the decision to transfer the Kochi city police commissioner.
Context
High-profile traffic accidents involving minors often spark intense public scrutiny and political pressure in India, particularly when questions arise about differential treatment for influential families. Police handling of such cases, including bail decisions and immediate disciplinary actions against officers, are closely watched by political leaders and the public to ensure accountability.
