Local shop owners in Dharwad want officials to crack down on unauthorized street selling and land grabs in public areas, stating these issues harm their livelihoods and block people on foot. During an October 28 media briefing, trade group speaker Deepak Rege pointed out that illegal stalls have spread across Subhash Road, the area surrounding the Lakshmi Narayan temple, and close to Basel Mission School. These setups block buyers from walking in easily and damage sales for permanent store and restaurant owners who clear rent, official taxes, and permit fees. Rege also noted that these blockades create dangers on roads for kids, older adults, and those with physical disabilities, while asking food inspectors to check food sold by vendors for bad quality or germs. He mentioned that temporary stalls set up for a nine-day temple event stayed active for about a month, with many sellers arriving from outside the city. He asked the Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation to explain the exact time limits, spots, and rules given for these permits. While the group supports people earning money, Rege stated they need proper relocation and fixed zones where their work does not hurt registered business owners or the public.
Context
Street vendor management is a common challenge for urban local bodies across India, as municipal corporations try to balance the rights of informal workers with the concerns of licensed shop owners and public safety. Such conflicts typically arise when temporary permissions stretch beyond their planned dates or spill over into busy pedestrian zones.
