UPDATE - follow-up to Airfare hikes: Keralam CM and Opposition Leader slam airlines for 'fleecing' NRKs: Leaders from both the ruling UDF and the opposition LDF in the Kerala Legislative Assembly have strongly criticized airlines for raising ticket prices during festival seasons, particularly on routes between Kerala and West Asia.

Assembly Discussion

Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan and Opposition Leader Pinarayi Vijayan stated that airlines are taking unfair advantage of non-resident Keralites by multiplying ticket rates up to five times or more. Mr. Satheesan noted that past and present state governments have repeatedly asked the Union government to set a limit on airfares. He added that he has personally discussed the matter with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Civil Aviation Minister K. Rammohan Naidu, while Kerala MPs have also brought it up in Parliament. Mr. Vijayan agreed with the Chief Minister, stating that the opposition shares the same view on protecting non-resident workers from such high costs.

Welfare and Walkout

The discussion began after opposition members moved an adjournment motion to talk about the denial of Welfare Board benefits and the end of the Loka Kerala Sabha. The opposition claimed that benefits like the pravasi pension and other NORKA supports have suffered, while higher insurance premiums have hurt the community. Following the rejection of the motion, opposition members staged a walkout. In response, Mr. Satheesan promised that benefits delayed for August, September, and October will be paid. He explained that welfare beneficiaries grew sharply from 17,771 in the 2020-21 period to 1,00,495 in 2026-27, and that member contributions are pending by 200 crore rupees. He also noted that insurance premiums had to be raised because the insurance company faced losses and hesitated to renew the policy.

Context

Non-resident workers form a vital part of Kerala's economy by sending home remittances that support thousands of local families. State governments frequently press national authorities on flight pricing because high travel costs severely impact ordinary workers visiting their hometowns.
