UPDATE - follow-up to Bajaj to raise Chetak production to 80,000 units a month by Q4 FY2027: Bajaj Auto will scale up monthly production of the Chetak electric scooter to about 80,000 units by the final quarter of fiscal year 2027, rising from its current output of just over 62,000 units. Joint Managing Director Rakesh Sharma announced the target after releasing the company results for the second quarter of FY2027. Market demand continues to outpace current manufacturing output.
Production Limits
Supply chain issues previously restricted manufacturing to roughly 40,000 units per month, even though available capacity stood at 60,000 units. Output has since returned to full capacity levels. Company executives expect further manufacturing improvements in the January to March quarter of 2027 to push output near the 80,000 mark.
Plant Plans
Manufacturing limits also affect the company lines for premium motorcycles and standard petrol engines. Bajaj is currently reviewing potential sites for a sixth manufacturing facility in India. A team is actively reviewing proposals from multiple state governments. Company leaders have not yet shared details on the expected financial investment, total capacity, final site, or project timeline.
Market Share
Electric scooters currently make up close to 25 percent of total scooter sales across India. That share could climb to 50 percent within the next three to five years according to company figures. Adoption rates differ greatly by region. Odisha leads at roughly 40 percent, Maharashtra follows at 30 to 35 percent, and Gujarat trails at 10 to 12 percent. The company also intends to broaden its Chetak product lineup over the next half year.
Context
Major two-wheeler makers frequently adjust production targets to match shifting consumer demand for electric vehicles. Expanding manufacturing capacity helps brands reduce waiting periods for buyers and secure a larger share of the fast-growing green mobility market in India.
