What Happened
Around 80 to 100 landless women in Waghjali village, Hingoli district, pasted ‘house sale’ notices on their doors on Thursday, October 29, 2026, saying they face loan repayment pressure. The women had taken loans through self‑help groups from a micro‑finance firm based in Washim district. They have repaid at least 70 % of the amount but say loan‑recovery agents keep visiting their homes and harassing them. Poor rainfall, crop loss and a lack of regular farm work have left many unable to keep up with instalments, prompting the drastic step of displaying sale notices. The notices bear the word ‘sale’ in bold, indicating fear of having to sell their houses. The micro‑finance firm has not issued a public response.
Reaction
A Krantikari Shetkari Sanghatana functionary reported the incident. Villager Dhammaratna More said the group has written to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and will protest at the district collector’s office if the administration does not intervene. Residents say the harassment left them with no other option. The district administration has not yet replied to the complaints.
Context
Crop‑failure‑driven debt distress is common among landless farm workers in Maharashtra, especially when informal lenders use aggressive recovery tactics. The protests aim to draw attention to the need for relief measures and better regulation of micro‑finance activities in rural areas.
