Serato co-founder AJ Wilderland has bankrolled the Opportunity party and helped shape its strategy as it aims to become a kingmaker. Wilderland, who owns about a quarter of Serato shares and sits on its board, has donated more than $280,000 since 2024 either personally or through his companies. His support made up 28% of the party's donations last year and half of the donations over $20,000 received so far this year.
Strategy and Policy
Wilderland started volunteering for Opportunity shortly before joining its board in 2025 and increasing his donations in 2026. Aside from financial backing, he has assisted with governance, strategy, and marketing, though policymaking is left to a separate team with domain expertise. He previously voted for the Greens and was once an Act supporter when he was younger. Opportunity leader Qiulae Wong stated the party would talk to the party with the most support first as a courtesy, while Wilderland noted the party could also negotiate with multiple parties at once.
Context
Political donors in various democratic systems often provide financial support and strategic advice to smaller parties aiming to cross electoral thresholds. In New Zealand's political landscape, minor parties frequently position themselves as potential kingmakers during elections to influence government policy.
