Shares of Equitas Small Finance Bank fell nearly 12 percent during Friday trade, marking a second straight day of losses. This sharp drop happened even though the bank reported a big jump in net profit to 218.03 crore rupees for the second quarter of the 27th financial year, compared to 24.13 crore rupees in the same period last year.
Leadership Exit
Long-time managing director and chief executive officer PN Vasudevan resigned from his post, which scared investors and caused the sell-off. Vasudevan stepped down because of worries about a conflict of interest since his daughter runs an unlisted non-banking finance company named Unico Housing Finance, founded by Varshini Vasudevan Pathangi. Vasudevan stated in his resignation letter that he had told the board and the Reserve Bank of India about this arrangement and that no actual conflict existed, but noted that perceptions can be stronger than reality and that investors felt the issue was hurting stock performance. Vasudevan led the institution since its start as a microfinance group in 2007 and helped turn it into a small finance bank in 2016.
Market Impact
Because of the sudden leadership change and related worries, the bank stock has dropped nearly 28 percent over the past two weeks, losing 30.69 percent in a month and 15 percent over a year. The stock traded at 50.36 rupees per share on the Bombay Stock Exchange, leaving the bank with a market value of 5,761.85 crore rupees. Despite the drop, brokerage firm Motilal Oswal Financial Services Limited kept a buy rating on the stock with a target price of 75 rupees per share, pointing to strong earnings, lower provisions, and a positive growth outlook for the future.
Context
Small finance banks in India serve underserved segments like small businesses and low-income households with basic banking and credit services. Leadership changes at financial institutions often cause temporary stock price swings as investors wait to see who will take charge next and how operations will proceed. Brokerages often look past short-term leadership news if a bank shows strong core earnings and solid underlying financial results.
