What Happened

The upcoming Hyundai Creta has been spotted during road tests near Gurugram and Manali, revealing fresh details about its design, features, and powertrain options. The next-generation SUV is built on the K3 platform and features larger dimensions along with sharper, more angular lines based on the 'Art of Steel' design language.

Design and Features

Recent spy shots of a lower-spec base variant show it riding on 205/65R16 tyres with steel wheels and covers, while a separate sighting in Manali confirmed a diesel engine variant. Exterior highlights include an upright front fascia, a slatted bumper, a new grille, LED projector headlamps, and H-styled top-mounted LED DRLs. The side profile features flush door handles, circular wheel arches, a slanted roofline, and angular window frames. At the back, the vehicle gets a raked windshield, a roof-mounted spoiler, a chunky bumper, a flat boot lid, and new tail lamps matching the front lighting setup. Inside, the new Creta transitions into a Software Defined Vehicle, allowing users to receive new features through over-the-air updates without visiting a service centre. It also introduces the Pleos Connect infotainment system, which moves most controls to a centrally mounted screen and replaces the traditional full-size instrument panel with a slim dashboard display for critical data like speed and fuel levels.

Powertrain and Launch

The SUV will offer a new strong hybrid powertrain using a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine for the Indian market, paired with regen braking and vehicle-to-load capabilities. Existing engine options will also carry over, alongside a global-spec setup that pairs a 1.6-litre GDI petrol engine with electric motors. Expected to launch in the first half of 2027, the next-gen Creta will compete against midsize SUVs like the Maruti Grand Vitara, Toyota Hyryder, Tata Sierra, and Honda Elevate.

Context

Automakers frequently test camouflage-covered prototype vehicles on public roads across diverse terrains like mountain passes and highways to evaluate engine durability and suspension performance before production begins. The shift toward software-defined vehicle architectures and hybrid powertrains reflects broader industry trends focused on improving fuel efficiency and enabling remote feature upgrades. Midsize SUVs remain one of the most competitive segments in the Indian automobile market, with multiple manufacturers regularly updating their lineups to attract buyers.
