The Haryana Congress on Saturday called the Bharatiya Janata Party's new campaign a political trick to draw attention away from tough questions on election fairness. The BJP is launching a nationwide campaign called 'Loktantra Bachao, Arajakta Hatao' to push back against the Opposition.

Protest Plans

The BJP's campaign lines up with a planned protest march by the INDIA bloc in New Delhi on November 1. The march targets the Election Commission's special intensive revision exercise. BJP national president Nitin Nabin will lead a padyatra for the party's campaign in Rohtak, Haryana, on the same day to fight what the party calls misinformation from the Opposition.

Congress Response

Haryana Congress in-charge Sanjay Dutt said the BJP has broken down democratic institutions over time. He stated that the ruling party wants an Election Commission that follows its orders and avoids answering serious charges of vote theft. Mr. Dutt added that the Congress party, led by Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi, will keep fighting to protect the Constitution and ensure fair elections. He asked why the Election Commission refuses to give complete transparency in updating voter lists and why claims of vote manipulation are not independently investigated.

Context

Political parties in India often launch rival public campaigns and street protests to shape public opinion ahead of key electoral showdowns. These disputes typically center on the neutrality and procedures of election oversight bodies during voter roll updates.
