The Telangana government on Saturday announced fixed maximum retail prices for three popular fine rice varieties in Hyderabad and Medchal. Under the new orders, the price for a kilogram of BPT and KNM variety is set at 66 rupees. The RNR or Telangana Sona variety is priced at 74 rupees per kilogram. The HMT and JSR variety carries a maximum retail price of 79 rupees per kilogram.
Implementation
Hyderabad's Chief Rationing Officer directed all rice mills, wholesale shops, and retail stores to display these prices clearly on banners. The name of the company must appear at the bottom of these displays. Medchal district officials issued similar orders for their area. Authorities fixed these rates after holding talks with wholesalers and retailers because fine rice prices recently climbed past 80 rupees per kilogram around the city. Civil Supplies officials will monitor markets to ensure nobody sells rice above the set limits, and strict action will follow any violations.
Context
Food price controls and maximum retail price caps are common regulatory tools used by state governments in India to protect consumers from sudden inflation and hoarding. Staple grains like rice are closely monitored by district food and civil supplies departments to ensure daily essentials remain affordable for ordinary households.
