Former Jharkhand Chief Minister Champai Soren has slammed the alleged rape of a woman inside a police station in the state's Seraikela-Kharswan district, calling it a repulsive image of jungle raj.
What Happened
The accused policeman, Niraj Lakra, has been arrested following the incident. Five other policemen, including Gamharia police station officer-in-charge Sanjay Prasad, were suspended for negligence and failure to do their duty. The victim had called the police from her mobile phone for help after a domestic dispute with her husband led her to seek a complaint through a neighbour. A PCR van brought her to the station at midnight without any female police personnel present, which violates established rules. Duty officials gave her a room to rest, where Lakra committed the crime.
Reaction
Mr. Soren stated that a woman goes to a police station seeking justice, only to face an assault in the middle of the night. He questioned where citizens can turn for safety when the police station itself is unsafe. On Saturday, he demanded the dismissal of such officers who turn from protectors into predators, along with strict action against senior officials. He warned that this incident creates a lasting stain on the police administration and will make female complainants fear for their safety before approaching any station.
Context
Police stations are designated safe spaces where citizens expect protection and immediate assistance from law enforcement officers. Rules regarding the handling of female complainants specifically mandate the presence of women personnel to ensure safety and proper protocols are followed. Incidents of misconduct within law enforcement facilities often trigger heavy public outrage and prompt administrative suspensions.
