Actor Sanjay Dutt recently spoke about his imprisonment and the 24-year legal battle he faced during an appearance on the talk show Shekhar Tonite hosted by Shekhar Suman. Dutt was first arrested on April 19, 1993, in connection with the 1993 Bombay serial blasts case. While he was eventually cleared of terrorism charges under the TADA act by a special court in 2007, he was convicted under the Arms Act for illegal possession of weapons. Recalling his initial arrest, Dutt shared that police handcuffed him in front of his father, late actor Sunil Dutt, who went into shock and wept. Dutt recounted telling his father not to let the procedure upset him, even though the moment caused him deep internal pain. He spent about 18 months as an undertrial before the Supreme Court granted him bail in October 1995. In 2013, the Supreme Court upheld his Arms Act conviction but reduced his sentence to five years. He surrendered in May 2013 and was finally released from Pune's Yerawada Central Jail on February 25, 2016, following remission for good conduct.
Prison Life and Resilience
Dutt told Suman that prison authorities attempted to break his spirit by stripping away his celebrity comforts and placing him in an anda cell. He recalled a prison official mocking him by stating he would not receive cigarettes, to which Dutt replied by asking if he could get a bidi instead. The actor stated that his lack of ego and his grounded nature helped him stay sane throughout the ordeal. He credited his time at The Lawrence School, Sanawar, for teaching him how to adjust, noting that he often sat on the ground to share meals with film workers. When asked how he found the strength to endure, Dutt responded with a chant of Har Har Mahadev.
Context
Legal cases involving high-profile film personalities often draw intense public attention over decades in India's judicial system. Convictions under the Arms Act carry strict legal penalties regarding unauthorized weapons possession. Prison remissions for good conduct are a standard part of correctional procedures in state facilities like Yerawada Central Jail.
