Flydubai captain Smit Machchhar averted a mid‑air disaster on Sep 30 after being stabbed by his co‑pilot on flight FZ1073 from Dubai to Tel Aviv. The Omani national co‑pilot attacked Machchhar inside the cockpit, causing the aircraft carrying 174 people to plunge nearly 14,000 feet in under 30 seconds. Despite serious injuries, Machchhar opened the cockpit door, allowing passengers and crew to enter. Passenger Yaniv Hayoun rushed in, helped restrain the attacker and pulled the controls backwards. Two off‑duty flydubai pilots on board then took over and steadied the plane. The flight was diverted to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, where it landed safely. Machchhar, who has 17 years of flying experience, is recovering in an Abu Dhabi hospital. Bollywood stars praised his bravery. Salman Khan posted on X, “Kamaal kar diya pilot ji… Will be a pleasure to fly with you,” tagging Capt #SmitMachchhar. Sanjay Dutt wrote on Instagram Stories, “A salute from the heart… Praying for your healing.” Rashmika Mandanna shared his picture, calling his act “courage” and wishing a speedy recovery. Ananya Panday called him “a true hero, Jai Hind,” while Ranveer Singh captioned his story “Captain Courageous.” The incident began on what was described as a routine flight before the violent confrontation. Authorities are still probing the motive behind the attack. ## Context Mid‑air attacks on commercial flights are extremely rare, making the pilot’s quick actions crucial in preventing loss of life. The involvement of off‑duty crew highlights airline safety protocols that rely on any trained personnel aboard.
