Indian stock indices mark major gains as Sensex climbs past 79,000
Reported by Rohit Yadav (Staff Writer) · The Hindu - Business ·
Indian stock markets recorded a massive rally for the sixth day in a row, driven by falling oil costs and political shifts in the United States. The benchmark BSE Sensex jumped 2,008.61 points, closing the session at 79,310.01 after touching an intraday high of 79,470.03. Similarly, the NSE Nifty gained 576 points to finish at 24,536.60.
Market Movers
Major gains across top companies powered the upward trend. Bajaj Finance led the winning pack with a 7.77% jump, followed by InterGlobe Aviation, ICICI Bank, Maruti, Mahindra & Mahindra, and Bajaj Finserv. On the other side, NTPC, Bharat Electronics, Adani Ports, and ITC ended the day as laggards. Over the past six trading sessions alone, the Sensex has shot up by over 6,063 points, while the Nifty climbed roughly 1,837 points.
Global Triggers
Investor sentiment received a strong boost from international developments, including a sharp drop in crude oil prices and robust gains on Wall Street, where the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 3.03%. Foreign institutional investors poured substantial capital into domestic equities, purchasing shares worth ₹7,284.03 crore. Meanwhile, U.S. midterm elections saw voters hand control of both chambers of Congress to the Democratic Party, raising hopes for political stability and a potential resolution to ongoing conflicts in West Asia.
Context
Stock markets often react strongly to global political shifts and commodity price movements because foreign investments and import costs directly impact corporate profits in India. When crude oil prices fall, the country saves valuable foreign exchange on energy imports, which usually improves overall investor confidence.
