Honda Cars India is preparing to launch two new sport utility vehicles in the country over the next few years. The upcoming lineup includes an electric vehicle and a petrol-powered compact model.
Electric SUV
The first model is the Honda 0 Alpha, which will serve as the company's first mass-market electric vehicle. It is built on a new skateboard-style electric platform designed specifically for battery power rather than being adapted from a petrol car. The design features a swoopy, aerodynamic look with ground clearance for rough roads, an illuminated badge, a U-shaped rear light setup, and 19-inch alloy wheels. Inside, the cabin features wide digital displays and technology features. The vehicle is aimed at a driving range of 450 to 500 kilometres on a single charge and supports fast charging that can take the battery from 15 percent to 80 percent in about 15 minutes. Production will take place at the Tapukara plant in Rajasthan to keep costs competitive. After its India launch, the car will also go to the Japan market.
Compact SUV
The second vehicle is a sub-4-metre compact SUV developed in partnership with Tata Technologies to compete with models like the Tata Nexon and Maruti Suzuki Brezza. This model is expected to arrive by 2028 and will feature a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine from Horse, with CNG and hybrid options likely to follow later.
Context
Honda is working to expand its presence in India's fast-growing sport utility vehicle market. The company aims to capture a larger share of local buyers by offering both electric and traditional fuel powertrain options.
