UPDATE - follow-up to Heavy rain lashes Puducherry: Heavy downpours have severely disrupted normal life across Puducherry, flooding homes and low-lying neighbourhoods after the city recorded 9.7 cm of rainfall between Saturday evening and Sunday morning.

Impacts And Warnings

Rainwater surged through major stormwater drains like the Grand Canal and Uppanar, while severe waterlogging hit areas such as Boomianpet, Krishna Nagar and Venkata Nagar. Traffic slowed down considerably at key junctions including Indira Gandhi Square, Rajiv Gandhi Square and the Sivaji statue on East Coast Road, with motorists struggling to navigate flooded stretches on the 45-feet road at Balaji Nagar. Vendors at the Sunday Market on Mahatma Gandhi Road also faced major business disruptions. In response to the severe weather, distant cautionary signal No. 1 was hoisted at Puducherry port, and the Department of Fisheries and Fishermen Welfare advised local fishermen to stay off the sea until October 27 due to strong winds expected over the Bay of Bengal.

Neighbouring Regions

Across the border in Tamil Nadu, the Regional Meteorological Centre forecast heavy to very heavy rain for Cuddalore and heavy rain for Villupuram districts. Cuddalore Collector Sibi Adhithya Senthil Kumar urged residents in low-lying areas and near waterbodies to move to safer spots and avoid bathing in rivers. The district also set up a round-the-clock emergency control room reachable at 1077 or 04142-220700, and instructed Cuddalore fishermen not to venture into the sea until October 29.

Context

Heavy seasonal rainfall and coastal storms frequently disrupt normal routines in southern peninsular India during this time of the year. Local authorities routinely issue port warnings and fishing bans to prevent accidents when rough seas and strong winds develop in the Bay of Bengal.
