Jio Platforms shares are making their long-awaited stock market debut on Wednesday, 28 October, following a massive ₹ 30,213-crore public issue. The company's shares will be listed on both the National Stock Exchange and the BSE after successful share allotment was completed on Monday, 27 October.
Subscription and Issue Details
The public subscription window ran from 21 October to 23 October, attracting strong investor interest across all categories. The overall issue was subscribed 22.19 times, led by qualified institutional buyers whose portion saw a 70.55 times subscription. Non-institutional investors subscribed 14 times, while the retail individual investor segment received bids for 2.72 times its reserved portion. The IPO consisted of a fresh issue of 27 crore equity shares without any offer-for-sale component. Jio Platforms plans to use up to ₹ 27,500 crore from the proceeds to repay borrowings held by its subsidiary, Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd. The issue price band was set between ₹ 1,065 and ₹ 1,119 per share, with a minimum lot size of 12 shares. Retail investors needed to invest ₹ 13,428 for a single lot at the upper end of the price band, and eligible employees received a discount of ₹ 54 per share on up to 46,94,835 reserved shares.
Market Debut and Grey Market
Trading on the listing day begins at 10:00 am, preceded by a special pre-open session from 9:00 am to 10:00 am to determine the equilibrium opening price. Ahead of the debut, the stock traded at a significant premium in the grey market. The grey market premium stood at ₹ 248 per share, suggesting an indicative listing price of around ₹ 1,367 per share based on the upper end of the price band. This indicates a potential premium of 22.16% for investors, translating to an indicative gain of ₹ 2,976 for a single lot of 12 shares. However, grey market rates are unofficial and can fluctuate based on market sentiment. Kotak Mahindra Capital Company Ltd. served as the book-running lead manager for the issue, and KFin Technologies Ltd. acted as the registrar.
Context
Stock exchange listings mark the transition of a private company into a publicly traded entity where shares can be freely bought and sold by the public. Major public issues often draw intense investor attention because they provide an opportunity to buy stakes in market-leading firms at an early stage. Pre-open sessions are standard regulatory procedures designed to prevent extreme price volatility right when normal trading opens.
