Jio Platforms made a strong stock market entry on October 28 with a 21.36% jump above its IPO price, pushing it into the spot of India's second-most valuable company. This debut caused Tata Consultancy Services to drop out of the top five most valuable firms for the first time in decades. Jio reached a market value of about 12.5 lakh crore rupees, while TCS slipped to sixth place with its value dropping to 8.76 lakh crore rupees as its shares fell to 2,411.70 rupees.
Market Shifts
Reliance Industries stayed the most valuable firm with a market cap of 16.20 lakh crore rupees. Bharti Airtel, HDFC Bank, and ICICI Bank took the third, fourth, and fifth spots with market values of 12.07 lakh crore rupees, 10.44 lakh crore rupees, and 9.83 lakh crore rupees respectively. The overall Reliance Group combined market value crossed 28 lakh crore rupees, beating the Tata Group at roughly 26 lakh crore rupees to become India's most valuable business house. For the first time in decades, neither the Tata Group nor the Adani Group had a company in the top five listed firms.
IPO Details And Reactions
The 30,213-crore rupee IPO of Jio Platforms opened at 1,358 rupees against the upper price of 1,119 rupees on the BSE and NSE. Akash Ambani, Chairman of Reliance Jio Infocomm, stated that the offering received applications worth over 7.5 lakh crore rupees and over 1.3 crore total applications. He noted that the company was fully subscribed within 95 minutes, making it the fastest ever for India's largest IPO. Meanwhile, broader markets fell as IT stocks dropped roughly 3.3% and benchmark indices lost more than 1%, pressured by rising crude oil prices and caution ahead of the US Federal Reserve policy decision.
Context
Major stock market debuts by large telecom and tech firms often reshuffle baseline corporate rankings and shift institutional investor focus away from traditional IT giants. Crude oil price spikes and global central bank decisions frequently trigger broad sell-offs across Indian equities as foreign portfolio investors adjust their risk exposure.
