UPDATE - follow-up to Renault Duster Hybrid review: Sets a new benchmark for hybrids: Renault has officially launched the new Duster Hybrid in India, priced between Rs 16.99 lakh and Rs 19.49 lakh (ex-showroom) across trims including the Evolution and top Emotion variant, in a bid to rescue the model's sluggish domestic performance.
Powertrain And Efficiency
The vehicle features an E-Tech 160 powertrain utilizing a 1.8-litre, naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine combined with a 1.4kWh battery pack, outperforming rival setups from Maruti Suzuki and Toyota. According to Renault, it achieves a certified fuel efficiency of 29kpl while delivering 160hp of combined output and 208Nm of torque from the electric motor, enabling a 0-100kph acceleration time of 9.6 seconds. The transmission is a dog-clutch automatic system pairing four ratios for the engine and two for the motor, operating without a conventional reverse gear as reversing is handled solely by the electric motor.
Design And Features
External updates include an illuminated Duster logo upfront, side hybrid badges, and a shortened exhaust pipe positioned ahead of the high-voltage battery. Inside, the cabin features lighter Dune Brown leatherette upholstery and a bright headliner to counter earlier dark interior complaints, alongside a boot capacity reduced from 518 to 372 litres due to the under-floor battery. To offset hybrid production costs, Renault dropped features like ADAS, the 360-degree camera, and the auto-dimming rear-view mirror just two months prior to launch. Customers receive a standard 7-year warranty on the car and an 8-year warranty on the battery pack.
Context
This launch comes six months after the initial re-introduction of the Duster nameplate in India faced slow sales due to gaps in the product lineup and the absence of a diesel engine option. Strong hybrid vehicles combine a conventional internal combustion engine with an electric motor and battery pack to significantly improve fuel efficiency, particularly in urban stop-and-go driving conditions.
