UPDATE - follow-up to Renault Duster Hybrid review: Sets a new benchmark for hybrids: Renault has officially launched the Duster Hybrid in India, with prices ranging from Rs 16.99 lakh for the entry-level Evolution trim up to Rs 19.49 lakh for the top-spec Emotion variant, ex-showroom. The new model arrives six months after the standard Duster rollout aimed to rescue the nameplate following slow initial sales, gaps in the product mix, and missing diesel engine options.

Powertrain and Performance

The vehicle features Renault's E-Tech 160 powertrain, utilizing a 1.8-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine paired with a 1.4kWh battery and an electric motor delivering 208Nm of torque. Combined output reaches 160hp, pushing the SUV from 0 to 100kph in a claimed 9.6 seconds. The setup features a clutchless dog-clutch transmission with four ratios for the engine and two for the motor, offering a certified fuel efficiency of 29kpl.

Features and Design

Visual updates include an illuminated front Duster logo, E-Tech badging, and a short exhaust terminating ahead of the high-voltage battery. Inside, the cabin receives lighter Dune Brown leatherette upholstery to replace the darker petrol variant interior. To offset hybrid production costs, Renault dropped ADAS, the 360-degree camera, and the auto-dimming mirror from the current release. Boot space drops from 518 litres to 372 litres due to the under-floor battery, and no spare wheel is included standard, though a puncture kit is provided.

Context

Automotive manufacturers often introduce hybrid variants to bridge the gap between traditional internal combustion engines and fully electric vehicles, especially as tightening fuel regulations drive demand for higher efficiency. The midsize SUV segment in India is highly competitive, currently dominated by established models from brands like Maruti Suzuki and Toyota. Warranty offerings of seven years on the car and eight years on the battery represent a significant push by Renault to rebuild consumer confidence in the market.
