UPDATE - follow-up to Andhra Pradesh braces for very severe cyclonic storm; landfall likely between Bapatla and Vizag on October 28: A depression over the Bay of Bengal is heading toward the Andhra Pradesh coast and is expected to strike as a very severe cyclonic storm by October 28.

Storm Intensity

Weather experts state that maximum sustained wind speeds could reach up to 130 kilometres per hour, potentially surpassing last year's storm Montha when Machilipatnam recorded 65 kilometres per hour. The system formed from a low-pressure area over the east-central and southeast Bay of Bengal, sitting hundreds of kilometres away from the Andaman Islands and various Andhra Pradesh coast points including Visakhapatnam, Kakinada, Machilipatnam, and Bapatla. It is projected to intensify through deep depression and cyclonic storm stages before reaching peak severity near the coast.

District Alerts

The India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for 13 districts across October 27 and 28, warning of isolated extremely heavy rainfall. Krishna and Bapatla districts face alerts for October 27, while Visakhapatnam, Alluri Sitharama Raju, Anakapalli, Kakinada, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Konaseema, East Godavari, West Godavari, Eluru, NTR, Krishna, Guntur, and Bapatla are covered for October 28. Light showers began in parts of Rayalaseema and south coastal Andhra Pradesh on Saturday, with Simhadripuram in YSR Kadapa recording 81.5 millimetres and Malapuram in Anantapur getting 74.5 millimetres.

Official Response

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has instructed officials to stay alert and prepare precautionary measures, including comprehensive plans for flood management and water conservation.

Context

Tropical cyclones in the Bay of Bengal frequently intensify during the post-monsoon season, driven by warm sea surface temperatures. Coastal states like Andhra Pradesh maintain elaborate disaster management frameworks and early warning systems to evacuate vulnerable populations ahead of severe landfalls.
